Description:
Engineering Manager & Tech Lead
The Company:
Called the "hottest non-profit on the planet" by FORTUNE magazine and a Top 50 Website by TIME, Kiva (www.kiva.org) is the world's first person-to-person lending marketplace for the poor. In just 4 years, Kiva has raised $100+ million for 300,000+ entrepreneurs in 50+ countries. Kiva combines the culture and approach of an internet start-up with an intense focus on alleviating global poverty. Kiva is poised to take its initial success to a whole new level - targeting $1 billion in loans by 2015 and expansion into new areas (e.g. student loans, climate change, etc). Headquartered in San Francisco, Kiva's team has 50 employees and 500+ volunteers.
The Team:
Kiva Engineering is a rapidly growing team of eleven motivated engineers. We operate as a "start-up" in that everybody counts, and your contribution has the potential to make a big impact: on Kiva, and the world at large. We follow a Scrum development process, with 20% of time allocated for engineering innovation.
The Job:
* Lead a team of 3-5 engineers responsible for Kiva's substantial suite of partner facing websites, as well the core financial services layer
* Participate in requirement gathering discussions. Help guide requirements towards the simplest and best possible solution
* Own the technical design process for all your products
* Help your team break down a spec into tasks
* Spend about 50% of your time getting your hands dirty in the code
You:
* Are fluent in all phases of the software development process
* Will do whatever it takes to get the job done
* Enjoy mentoring your team mates
* Have lived in an extreme start-up environment. Having 10,000 things to do and no-one to do them does not phase you
* Can multi-task and context-switch in your sleep. Managing your team split across two simultaneous projects is likely to be the norm
* Are a generalist. You could specify, design, implement and QA an ecommerce web site from the ground up, by yourself, with one hand tied behind your back
Experience:
* 8+ years of experience in server-side web development in PHP or Java
* 2+ years of experience leading a team of at least 3 engineers
* Have taken responsiblity for an application that manages real money. Social media is fun. This is the real world.
* Experience with and devotion to an Agile software development process - preferably Scrum
Compensation:
* Base salary with bonus potential for 2010, plus a comprehensive benefits package
* Tons of “psychic income” for doing good in the world – priceless!
